UPVC Door Repair: The Short Answer

Why has my uPVC door stopped locking?
The lift-to-lock strip inside a uPVC or composite door is a multipoint mechanism, and the gearbox at its centre is the part that fails. When it goes, the door either will not throw the hooks or will not unlock at all. We replace the gearbox (Fullex, Winkhaus, Yale and others) and keep the rest of the mechanism, which costs a fraction of a new door.
Can a dropped uPVC door be realigned?
uPVC doors drop over time as hinges wear and the frame moves with the seasons. A dropped door catches, sticks, and eventually strains the mechanism until it breaks. Re-aligning the door and adjusting the keeps often fixes stiff locking before it turns into a gearbox failure.

My uPVC door only locks if I lift the handle hard. Is that serious?
It is the early sign of a failing multipoint gearbox or a dropped door. Caught early it is often just an alignment; left too long the gearbox breaks and you can get locked in or out. Worth booking before it fails.
Do I need a whole new door?
Almost never. The door and frame are usually fine: it is the mechanism, handle or cylinder that is worn. We repair those and leave the door in place. Gearbox replacement starts at £85.
The key turns but the door will not unlock. Can you help?
Yes. That is a classic gearbox failure. We can often still open it non-destructively, then replace the mechanism the same visit.
Can you fit an anti-snap cylinder to my uPVC door?
Yes, most uPVC doors take a euro cylinder, and swapping in a three-star anti-snap one is a quick, worthwhile upgrade against lock snapping.
How do I know which multipoint mechanism I have?
You do not need to. We identify the brand and gearbox (Fullex, Winkhaus, Yale, Maco and others) from the strip and stamp on the door edge, and carry the common ones so most jobs are done in one visit.
