Hillingdon’s door stock, and what goes wrong with it

Hillingdon is mostly a between-the-wars suburb: pairs of semis and short terraces laid out along Long Lane and the roads off it, with a large band of former council housing around Oak Farm and Colham Green that has passed into private hands through right-to-buy. How a Hillingdon lockout is handled, step by step

When the handle has to be heaved before the key will turn, the fault is nearly always in one of those three, not in the cylinder. Gearboxes wear internally and their cast components crack; strips lose their alignment when the door drops on its hinges; keeps drift out of line as an old frame settles.

That last point matters more in Hillingdon than on a newer estate. Composite doors are heavy, and a lot of them here were hung in interwar frames that had already moved. Over a few years the hinge side sags, the hooks start catching the top edge of the keeps, and the owner learns to lift the handle harder and harder until one day the gearbox lets go.
