How Watford’s streets shape the work

The kind of lock a locksmith meets in Watford depends on which side of the town centre the van is parked. Getting back in without a drill

About 95 in every 100 lockouts Kenny attends end with the door open and the lock still in one piece. A pin-tumbler cylinder can be picked or raked; a lever mortice can be read and lifted with a curtain pick; a nightlatch that has simply slammed behind you can often be slipped without touching the lock at all. That order of attack is deliberate: drilling destroys the lock and commits you to a replacement, so it is held back for the handful of cylinders that are engineered to defeat picking. When a lock does have to be drilled, a replacement goes in during the same visit and keys are cut before the van leaves. Nightlatch or deadlock: which one is letting you down?

On a Watford terrace the two locks on the front door fail in different ways, and telling them apart saves a wasted call. A nightlatch problem usually shows as a door that will not stay shut, a latch that has to be pushed home by hand, or a key that turns but does nothing because the internal snib has been left down.
