Lock work on West Drayton’s 1930s houses and newer flats

West Drayton’s housing is a mix, and so is the lock work. The streets of 1930s houses that run up towards Yiewsley were built with timber front doors, and a good number still have the original arrangement of a rim nightlatch above a mortice lock. Others have long since been refitted with uPVC or composite doors running a multipoint mechanism and a euro cylinder. Nearer the station, and in the newer developments that have gone up across the area, blocks of flats add communal entrances, fob systems and lighter flat doors to the list.

The faults follow the door. On uPVC and composite doors it is the gearbox at the centre of the multipoint strip, which wears until the handle goes slack or the key spins without unlocking, a job for our uPVC door repair service. In the flats it is mostly cylinder changes between occupants and communal doors that have stopped latching.

Locked out in UB7: picking before drilling

A lockout in West Drayton is treated as an emergency whatever the time, and the first question we ask is what kind of lock is on the door, because that decides how we get you in. Nightlatches, five-lever mortice locks and ordinary euro cylinders can almost always be picked or manipulated open, which leaves the lock intact and nothing to pay for beyond the entry itself. Lock changes for landlords and airport-worker rentals

Landlords with several properties or an HMO can have the doors keyed alike or set up under a master key, so the management key opens every door while each tenant’s key opens only their own. Bringing UB7 doors up to insurance standard

Insurers write their lock requirements around two standards, and West Drayton’s housing needs both. A timber front door on one of the 1930s houses will usually be asked to carry a BS3621 five-lever mortice deadlock, fitted from £120, which we install into the existing door without changing its appearance. A nightlatch on its own, however solid, does not meet that clause.

For uPVC and composite doors the standard is a TS007 3-star cylinder, which resists lock snapping, the forced-entry method those doors are most exposed to. We fit Ultion and Mul-T-Lock 3-star cylinders from £95, and if the multipoint strip behind the cylinder is a Yale, ERA, Winkhaus or Fullex unit that has started to wear, we carry the parts to sort it in the same visit. Flat doors in the newer blocks can usually take the same 3-star cylinder upgrade.

If you are not sure what is on the door now, a photo of the lock face and the door edge sent by WhatsApp is usually enough for us to say whether an upgrade is needed at all. Plenty of doors already meet the standard, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a lock you do not need.
