Why timber doors set the agenda in N21

Walk the streets around the Green, Wades Hill and Vicars Moor Lane and the door stock is obvious: Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, most with the original panelled timber front door still in the frame. Those doors were built for a rim lock, and a great many still run one, sometimes with a mortice sashlock or a cheap two-lever deadlock added decades ago. Nightlatch, deadlock, or both: what a period door needs

Many Winchmore Hill householders are not sure what the difference is, so it is worth spelling out. When the replacement uPVC door starts misbehaving

The interwar semis and the newer infill around the area lean on uPVC and composite doors, and these fail differently. The lock is not one lock but a strip: a central gearbox driven by the handle and key, pushing hooks, rollers or bolts into keeps along the frame. Two things go wrong. First, the door drops. Hinges wear, the slab sags a few millimetres, and the hooks no longer line up with the keeps, so the handle has to be heaved upward before the key will turn. Second, the gearbox itself wears: a spring breaks or a cam rounds off, and one day the handle lifts but nothing engages, or the key simply spins.

Both are repairable without a new door.
